Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that the L1 chain team is considering the possibility of increasing the gas limit multiple times - from 10 to 100 times from current values.
Current gas limit:
- ~36 million units (according to YCharts)
- A year ago: 30 million
- Potential target: 360-3600 million
What is a gas limit?
This is the maximum amount of computation available for transactions and smart contracts in a block. It affects:
- Network bandwidth
- Amount of commissions
- Overload Tolerance
The last time the gas limit was increased was in February 2024 - from 30 to 32 million, without a hard fork (51% of validators voted in favor)
Why you need it:
- More transactions per block
- Lower fees for high workloads
- Support for scaling without full dependence on L2
